Leading PD
The Goal: To get all staff familiarized/trained in AVID W.I.C.O.R. (Writing, Inquiry, Collaborations, Organization, Reading) strategies.
The Problem: Teachers having different conference periods The "Fixer": I spoke with our Site Team and Administration asking for an hour of PD time during Teacher PD days and In-service. The Outcome: 96% of our staff are AVID trained on campus. We are allotted 1 hour of time each PD day of the year. STAAR Testing The Goal: To get all 7th and 8th grade students STAAR ready
The Problem: Scheduling, new students The "Fixer": I worked overtime entering all student data and overhauling the daily schedule for core and elective teachers The Outcome: STAAR testing went off without a hitch....well almost :) |
Culture Building
The Goal: To increase knowledge, awareness, and appreciation of other cultures on campus among students, parents, staff, and the community.
The Problem: Scheduling and having enough countries represented at the Multicultural Fair The "Fixer": A committee was formed and my job was to get more countries represented at the fair. I offered Community Service hours to my AVID, Skills for Success, and PE students who researched their heritage and created a station. The Outcome: We had over 150 countries represented at the fair and a sign-in sheet with 400+ parent attendees. Worth the Wait The Goal: Educate our students on the importance of waiting for intimacy
The Problem: Many students are already sexually active and don't want to listen to "lectures" from administrators or teachers The "Fixer": I created an open, relaxed environment that put students at ease and allowed them to receive the information in a nonthreatening manner The Outcome: 20% of our student population realized they were "worth the wait" |
Organizing Events
The Goal: To raise money for our AVID students to take field trips to various colleges and facilities to learn more about different workforce fields.
The Problem: not enough money in the AVID budget, and only being allowed 2 fundraiser per semester. The "Fixer": I strategically planned our fundraisers based on our students wants to organize our events. (Dances, Breast Cancer Shirts, Talents Show) The Outcome: My students were able to travel to the following: Baylor, UT Austin, Huston-Tillotson University, UNT, Tarleton, UTA, Rice, U of H, AVID night for Six Flags, the Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, and Dallas Stars with guest speakers from each of their operations. Bowling The Goal: Reward all 7th and 8th grade students with 90 and above averages and/or perfect attendance.
The Problem: $300 budget and teacher schedules The "Fixer": I restructured schedules so that core teachers would have either the morning or afternoon off and students wouldn't miss any core courses. Negotiated with the bowling alley owner and recommended he open the concession stand to make up the cost difference The Outcome: A great outing with happy students |
Discipline
The Goal: To hold our female athletes accountable for their school work and grades
The Problem: Different coaches in each athletic period. The "Fixer": I worked with our Athletic Coordinator to push for a day designated to hold student-athletes accountable for their work. Also, hold study hall sessions 2 days a week opposite of our practice times for students with a grade below 75 in any class. The Outcome: Our passing rates have significantly increased over the last 3 years on the girls side. I personally coach volleyball, and my passing rate has been over 98% the last 3 years. Movies The Goal: Reward all 7th and 8th grade students with 90 and above averages and/or perfect attendance.
The Problem: $300 budget and teacher schedules The "Fixer": I negotiated with the movie theater to rent the entire facility and stayed within the budget. Restructured schedules to make sure all students attended core courses and give core teachers either the morning or afternoon off The Outcome: A fun day watching Despicable Me! |
